I really don't know, for I have not had a prolonged encounter with drugs and not with booze beyond sort of semi-serious binge drinking, but I suspect that those who get deep into drugs and drinking in harmful manner are maybe unwilling to just deal with a sense of boredom, or general life messiness, or perhaps just the regular low-level pain that often comes with everyday living? I'm really just guessing. Have been reading about heroin, for example. What a life choice that is. Man.
