I'll admit that, when I let slide these thick envelopes into the blue steel post boxes, the envelopes loaded with stamps in the top-right corners, I congratulate myself for supporting the U.S. Postal Service, that beleaguered, unwieldy mass that ensures I can send personal essays to Portland, Oregon or East Lansing, Michigan for a dollar thirty-two.
