There are probably a thousand reasons why people listen to music, the need it satisfies, the itch it scratches. But for me, one of the coolest things--and it happens all the time if I'm listening to a lot of music, especially new music--is the sudden realization that a song or even an album is really good. This morning, getting ready for work, I put on the Fleet Foxes album. I've listened two or three times before, but never really paying attention to it. I thought, sure, that's nice. But this morning, slipping into black socks, the song "White Winter Hymnal" came on and pow, it struck me. This song, right here, is good. And then the cascade of other feelings: It makes me feel good. I want to listen to it over and over. I want to tell somebody about this. It's got all the signs, I guess, of a little moment of love.
So, here's to five minutes of feeling good, a little less gray, a little more purple, when you're putting your pants on in the morning.
